Most people go into business for money. It is nothing wrong with that as long as we all are expecting our businesses to make a living. But does a money goal stay at the root of a thriving business? Unfortunately, it seems that no, a money goal never makes a business thrive. Here’s a big contradiction which makes a lot of people struggle. The confusion appears until people understand how money is made in a business. The truth is that money comes when you are not expressly focused on it! Talking about business, Guy Kawasaki, the famous venture capitalist mentioned: “We meet with entrepreneurs all the time and they tell us what they think we want to hear, that they want to make money. When we hear that, it’s so depressing. It took me 20 years to come to this understanding, but the companies that are successful are the ones who create meaning. Create the next curve; don’t improve on sameness,” he said. “The one question you should ask yourself before starting any new venture: Do I want to make meaning?” (Guy Kawasaki: Advice for Making Your Venture Successful) So, what does it mean to create meaning? The answer is exactly the reason why we choose to make a particular business. We feel that in that way we can improve something, and we can change some people’s lives for the better. Of course how good (or poor) are we able to make this change happen will be measured in money. But money is there only to give us the means to implement our idea and to measure our success. Money has nothing to do directly with our idea. Our business idea and its meaning is the starting point and the ending point in judging a business. And this idea translates in purpose. What we want to do and why? By answering these two questions we already know our business’ purpose. Here lies the big secret of successful businesses. All thriving businesses are engaged in their purpose. Being engaged means much more than establishing a rational goal to accomplish something. When we are engaged in our business we put there a part of our heart and soul. We are ready to put there all our efforts and do our best to succeed in changing our customers’ lives for the better. We feel happy when our clients are happy with us. This is our ultimate satisfaction. I’m not saying that this is enough for a business to be profitable. It is not enough, but it is an essential starting point for any business to ever succeed. After the engaging purpose should come our business knowledge which will help us in effectively implementing our idea. This is part of science. But science alone will never make a business succeed. Before applying our business knowledge we need to have an engaging reason why we are in that business. Creating a Business: A Matter of Art and ScienceWhen I was a teen, I was dreaming to become a stage director or a filmmaker. I loved to go almost every evening to the theatre or cinema and I read a lot of books full of stories about the history of theatre and movie pictures.
Every fiction book I read I imagined how its action could look like on the stage, how the story could be transformed into a play or in a movie, how could the actors look like, and how could I create the scene. I was fascinated by the way theater and movies can tell stories making them look so real. I lived what was happening on the stage or in movies together with the actors. And I noticed that some plays and some movies did change something in my life and in the way I perceived things. Eventually I started to film some home movies and than became growing up in my "film and movie" career. I decided to run my own video production business. We opened a corporate video production in Toronto, Canada, called ArtClip. And it was very fascinating to make some creative stories and helping the others to grow their business. With our fair prices and professional quality we are doing an outstanding job for our customers. Later, when I started my business studies and I have begun to learn about vision and strategy and implementation as important stages of building a business, I immediately made the connection. The process is the same! Building a business and creating a theater show or a movie follow the same steps. First comes the idea which is developed into a unique value proposition comprising what we want to convey/to offer and to whom and why. The books we read, the theater plays and the movies are meant in essence to solve people’s problems like the products and services are. After we consume them, our lives should improve in some ways. Best theater shows and movies are the genuine ones, those which lead to our transformation and which we cannot forget. Best businesses are also those which deliver their products and services exceeding our expectations, offering products and services we cannot forget. We fall in love with brands like we fall in love with shows we really enjoy. Building a brand in business is similar to building brands in the entertainment industry. Shows and movies start with the director’s vision like businesses start with the entrepreneur’s vision. The key success factor for both the art shows and businesses is the mastery of implementing the vision which requires learning and skills. All in all, the entrepreneur is finally an artist with a bold and genuine vision and with sound implementing skills. I fell in love with business at the very moment I realized it is about art and not about cold spread sheets and boring analysis and economic indicators. Business consultants, MBAs and corporations use to talk business in a foreign language. This was the way they succeeded to get huge amounts of money for things common people couldn’t understand. It was like all the people around you would start to speak in a language you don’t get. They continue to say what they said before in plain English, but with other words. Imagine how frustrated you would feel. The same happens with business and financial jargon. Break-even point, economic value added or EVA, SMART objectives, business strategy, SWOT analysis, critical thinking, marketing mix, entrepreneurial skills, profit margin, profit center, business system, target market are only sophisticated names given to common sense ideas any people with a very basic education could get.
These are concepts and ideas about business that a lot of small entrepreneurs understand very well and use daily without knowing their scholarly names. But finally, what is business? What does it mean to ‘think business’? If you feel scared hearing about learning ‘strategic thinking’, you’ll see how simple this could be! Any business is based on generating profit. Simply put, let’s say John has a small store selling among other things, ice-cream. On hot summer days, people in the area come and buy ice-cream from John’s. It is the same ice-cream they could buy from any hypermarket at a smaller price. So, why would they come and buy from John’s? They prefer to buy from John because his store is close to their homes – they don’t need to lose time going to the hypermarket. Going to the hypermarket to buy ice-cream means them spending more time and having the ice-cream melted until they get home. So, people are willing and ready to pay extra for having the convenience of buying ice-cream in their proximity. That’s how John generates profit. He buys the ice-cream from the supplier for $1 and sells it for $1.50. The extra $0.50 he gets is the money equivalent of the (relevant) service he’s making to his customers. If John would have bought the ice-cream from the hypermarket for $1 and tried to sell it in front of the hypermarket for $1.50, no one would have bought it. Right? People pay only for a meaningful value. Let’s take another example, a famous one. McDonald’s. Do people go to McDonald’s to buy an excellent hamburger? No way! The hamburger is pretty good, but for an excellent one, you have probably to go in other places. Then, why do people give money to McDonald’s? (or, in other words: ‘Where do McDonald’s generate profit?’) People go there to eat quickly. McDonald’s founder, Ray Kroc understood this need and developed a system (a method) of quick service to be easily applied in any store. So, McDonald’s gets extra money for offering quick service. This ‘extra money’ represents the exchange for the relevant value a business produces (generates). And relevant value means what is the business doing interesting for people to pay extra money. When any business makes a sale, it means someone pays for something meaningful, for something valuable. When the number of sales is enough for the business to cover all the expenses, that means it serves (is relevant for) a big enough group of people (the target market) willing and ready to pay ‘extra money’ for something they appreciate. At the moment the business covers all its costs from the money it produces (generates), consultants say ‘the business reaches the break-even point’. From this point on, what the business get is profit, namely gross profit. Why gross profit? Because of this profit, the business has to pay taxes. After paying due taxes, what rests in the net profit. Understanding this idea is the starting point in learning to ‘think business’. Thinking business is the key, the critical step in creating a successful business based on your natural gifts and passions. REMEMBER! To be able to generate profit (to exist!), any business should do something valuable and relevant for a big enough group of customers willing and ready to pay for it. Producing something valuable, the business serves its group of customers. In exchange, the business gets extra money translated into SALES. DO THIS EXERCISE: Try to think about the businesses you get in contact with what for they get the ‘extra money’ (how they generate profit) and take notes about your findings. This is your first step in developing the capacity of ‘thinking business’. Being their own boss and living under their own rules is for most people a dream too good to be true. It seems like a fairy tale that just some very fortunate people can ever live. Not thinking that this dream can be possible makes it impossible. Think about that! Can anyone achieve something s/he never intend to achieve? Your own business is your ticket to a life lived under your rules, isn’t it? To live in the way we want, without someone else making our daily agenda, we need to have money enough to pay our bills and to do and have what we might want. Most people are kept into a dead-end job trap by a monthly income, by a lot of debts having to be paid and by a comfort zone which gives them the illusion of security. What we know looks sure. We feel that our job is there forever. We feel that our income is there forever. We are going each day to our work with the belief that this is our right to go there and make our living in this way. We aren’t willing to change things. We prefer to live in mediocrity than to take our lives into our hands. That’s because we don’t know what to do and we aren’t sure that we could succeed. We’re afraid. We are scared of the unknown and we don’t believe in ourselves. We think that business is risky. It is for other people more knowledgeable and fortunate than we are. Business is too complicated to grasp. It is a lottery where we cannot be the lucky ones. Others are always the winners. And this is true for only one reason: We believe it to be true. There’s nothing else out of our own thoughts and beliefs keeping us far from the life we dream to live. If you knew how simple things are and how easily dreams can become true, you’ll take immediately the decision to go for a new life. A successful business that can sustain your amazing dream life starts with things you like to do and with what you can do to serve others in exchange for their money. You’re not going in business to make money, you’re going in business to do your best to help other people. When you start from this perspective, creating your business becomes a natural process. Your business needs to be your expression, not a recipe copied from others. A successful business is always built on passion, love, dedication, and desire to learn and do things better. Are you now able to see starting your own business from a different perspective? I’d found myself procrastinating many times after I settled a goal for myself. And though every time my procrastination had a (reasonable!) reason, I felt stupid and concluded that I don’t deserve too much. It is said that procrastination is a sign showing us that we are not in alignment with our goals and that self-sabotage (which includes procrastination) is a tough reaction of our unconscious programming to attempts of changes we decide to make in our lives. I longtime struggled setting goals and then, instead of going and accomplishing them, I found myself doing things contrary to what I should have done to achieve my goals. Not being aware of the self-sabotaging pattern I was experiencing, I blamed the bad luck and even an external conspiracy against my achievement. I thought that other people and adverse forces joined efforts against me to stop me from succeeding. You probably know very well this feeling. You try to do something and put all your efforts into it and instead of getting results, simply you see yourself incapable to reach your target.
Blaming others and circumstances is the worst thing to do in this situation. Understanding what’s happening - acknowledging that we are just experiencing a behavioral pattern – can help us overcome our unconscious actions. Identifying the cause is the first step in any cure. When we realize that there’s no need to fight external forces and that everything happens inside us, all we have to do is to take responsibility for our actions and embark to change things. It is in our own power to do it. The first thing to do is to become aware of the pattern. Just watch yourself self-sabotaging your actions. Look at everything you did from this perspective and acknowledge what you did wrong. Don’t think about other people's reactions or unfavorable circumstances. Just analyze your actions and beliefs. Then try to imagine how things would have been different if your behavior were different. Now take responsibility and make another attempt to reach your goal. This time closely watch your actions and modify the pattern. Don’t repeat the mistakes you did before. Do everything as any successful person would do it, knowing that the results are only under your own control. Here’s an example. A few years ago, when I had just started my own window decoration business, I decided to build an online presence to increase awareness of my store’s brand. Without taking the time to analyze several offers, I stopped at the first web design studio and signed the contract for the website. I had a short talk with them explaining what I want to get and thought that they understood. I paid the amount they requested and when I got the final work, I was shocked. It hadn’t anything to do with my store’s image and with how I intended its online presence to be. Naturally, my reaction was to blame the designers to not understand anything and to be unprofessional. It seems like bad luck, isn’t it? But it was entirely my fault:
In fact, deep in my heart, I didn’t really believe that I can have a very good website. Now I can come up with a lot of reasons (excuses) why I arrived in this situation:
But finally, the fact is that I was entirely responsible for the bad results I got and for losing the money. It happened because I carried the belief that having a website is difficult and most websites are not what they were intended to be. And I didn’t clearly visualize how my website should look like. This is how things are happening in many other situations when we don’t get the desired results. I am sure you have a lot of examples. The fact is that we are the only ones sabotaging the achievement of our goals. Not knowing very clear what we want and not feeling that we are responsible for the result, we are victims of our own confusion. For children dreaming is natural. They dream and truly believe that they can do anything. And this happens up to the moment when they start to listen to adults. Willing to defend their children from a possible future disappointment, the parents are the first to bring them with ‘the feet on the ground’. On one side, parents encourage children to have dreams about their future, but on the other side, they tell them to keep in mind that there is also the possibility for their dreams to not happen and advise them to have more ‘realistic’ dreams. During the school years, one of the teachers’ favorite pieces of advice is to stop dreaming and wake up to reality.
When you’re told all the time by the closest people in your life that life’s difficult and complicated and that you should be careful about what you’re dreaming, you finished by buying into these ideas! In this way, we begin to put limits on our dreams. Knowing that life should be tough and that dreams rarely come true we become careful with how big our dreams are. Anytime we have a desire we start to analyze if this is possible for us or not. We also begin to be afraid to dream too big and start to set average goals and expect less from life to not end by being disappointed. By putting limits on our dreams, we put limits on our success in life. We indulge in mediocrity and perceive compromise as normality. And we look to other people achieving a lot of things in their lives and think they are lucky. But never wonder where their luck comes from? If we look closer at what these people think and do in their lives, we’ll find out that the first thing they do is to not have afraid of dreaming. They know that their vision of success is the first step in accomplishing it. How could someone achieve something in life if she isn’t thinking and expecting to get it? For every effect in our lives, there’s a cause. The law of cause and effect acts either we’re aware of it or not. If the hazard makes some unexpected things to occur in our lives, it doesn’t lead to lasting effects. Let’s take an example, a very common one: winning the big lottery. As you probably know, statistics say that a very big percentage of the winners lose their fortunes in the first two-three years and they return to their previous financial state or maybe worse. What’s happening? Before winning the lottery, in their minds, they used to see themselves struggling with money. They have never dared to see themselves rich just because they were told and bought into the idea they cannot ever become rich. They saw wealth as impossible for them. And, when hazard makes them a surprise, the cause is still producing its effect: they return to the state they see themselves in! The same thing happens for people being in the opposite situation. When someone dreams big and hazard brings unpleasant surprises, all the effects produced by hazard don’t last long. All the roadblocks coming in their ways are eliminated one by one and each time these people return towards their direction. So, the problem with achieving success in life is not if we are fortunate or not. To can ever become successful, our challenge is to dream big and set daring targets. We have to be aware that we’ll never reach a destination where we don’t intend to go. Procrastination is a problem for many people. But, it isn’t the main problem. Like a symptom as pain or itching might be a sign of a physical disease, procrastination is a symptom of a spiritual disease. Whenever we find ourselves procrastinating in pursuing a goal, it is clear that something happens inside us; we are not in alignment with our goal. Even if our goal is meant to take us to the next level and help us grow, our mindset might not be ready to support it. We’re living inside a comfort zone that is keeping us safe from any sort of danger. Our inner programming perceives as ‘danger’ any change we attempt to make in our lives. We tend to live inside a known environment and our subconscious mind is trained to reject all actions which try to take us out of this area.
When you’ve been an employee for several years, you’re used to working following the instructions received from your superiors. There has always been someone telling you what to do or giving you directions when you felt stuck. If you decide to start your business and become an entrepreneur, you’ll inevitably face difficulties in following your own schedule. Knowing that there’s no one to be accountable to on one side, and being confused about how to do some specific things on the other side, drives you to postpone tasks and use your time in an unproductive way. When this happens, you witness your subconscious programming in action. Your subconscious mind wants to ‘demonstrate’ that what you’re attempting to do is not getting results and convince you to give up and go back to your previous (employee’s) status. By acknowledging this automated reaction, you’ll be able to overcome your own unconscious opponent. What you have to do is to build a very clear vision about what you intend to achieve and define why you want to accomplish this vision. Keeping permanently in your mind a clear vision about your future will help you manage your inner emotions and overcome what is holding you back. This is the first and most important thing to do. Besides, there’s a trick you can use to overcome procrastination: when you find yourself procrastinating, build the habit to start immediately an action that is getting you closer to your goal. Get immersed in the action and don’t think anymore if there’s the right moment to do it or not or if there are any excuses for not doing it now. There’s a lot of people believing that life is a matter of hazard. They think the future is unfolding behind people without any control on their part. Success is luck, money is luck, unpleasant things occurring are bad luck. In a way, they’re right. Believing that we have no control over our future, we simply let our lives at the mercy of hazard. Not deliberately envisioning the future we would prefer to live in, we really let hazard building the circumstances of our lives. The lack of clarity about our future is that makes us live a life of struggle and frustration. We simply project in our future our contradictory thoughts, our fears, doubts and hopes, and our feelings of uncertainty regarding what we may experience – what hazard might bring us.
It doesn’t matter if we think positively or negatively. As long as we hope in hazard to bring experiences in our lives, we are living by hazard. The alternative is to use our power of choice and live by design and purpose. We have the power to decide what we want to experience in the future and then expect- without any fears or doubts regarding their manifestation – these experiences to come. We all know at least a few people that have everything in their lives. Everything they want to achieve they achieve, and it seems nothing can stop them. Consciously or unconsciously these people are applying the ‘living by design’ way in their lives. They have the capacity to envision their future and to visualize in detail how their lives have to look like. They have no doubts that they will get what they want and they know that all obstacles will get out of their way sooner or later. This approach regarding their future makes them unstoppable. They see with their mind’s eyes their future as a movie–a movie created by themselves–, and they are very clear about what they want to experience. At the same time, they are sure they will get what they want and they expect to see outside what they conceived inside. Meantime, they focus and take massive action toward their goals. This is life by design. It is not complicated at all. Why most people don’t give this approach just a try? Do they have anything to lose? I’ve longtime wondered if we, as humans, do have any power over the circumstances we are living in? My doubts and fears about my future lead me to make a big mistake. Whenever I was thinking about what I would like to do in the following months or years, I’ve always wondered if this could be possible for me. And I finished by eliminating daring goals and keeping small goals that I considered achievable for me. But I’ve never thought about where this possibility comes from? Who had the right to decide if I can do something or not? I’ve never asked myself: Why not? If I would have put myself this question, I’ve probably come up with reasons like I’m not capable of, or I don’t deserve something like this, or it can happen only to others, or it is too much for me, or simply, it’s impossible for me. And I would have realized that all these explanations are really stupid.
Finally, there is no reasonable reason why we are not able to achieve something as long as we think about it. Whenever we have a wish, it’s a sign we can manifest it. We’ve been taught that we are all equal in front of God. If this is true, there’s no reason for any of us to not be able to be, have or do what other people are capable to achieve… Everything depends on how we are using our brain, how we are listening to our hearts and how we are harnessing our natural gifts. It requires focus and dedication to accomplish goals. Nothing and nobody has the right to limit our power of achieving our goals and the effort we are able to put to reach a target. The problem is first if we do have a goal, and secondly how big and important this goal is. Looking back to my past, I clearly realize that I achieved what I expected to achieve – what I envisioned and believed I am capable of, nothing more and nothing less than that. And if this is true, then how could we expect to get more out of life if we don’t even think we can get it? Success doesn’t happen in our lives by hazard. The way we’re living today is exactly the way we thought yesterday. Now, the conclusion is clear: Creating a new life should start in our thoughts. We need to establish what we want to be, have or do in life, regardless of how our lives are looking like at present. This is the first and most important step we have to do if we really want to change what we don’t like and start living by purpose. |
